Weekly Insight: Re-thinking my Health Journey
I’ve been feeling off lately.
Little things: gut issues, low energy, mood swings, migraines, skin changes, and yes, a few extra pounds.
I know I’ve done the work to get my cortisol and stress dialed in
(as much as one can while working full time with two little kids).
But deep down, I started to feel like something else was going on.
Maybe my hormones are starting to shift (I’m 36, so this is entirely possible).
Maybe my gut is wrecked from five years of consistent antibiotic use (thank you, kids).
Maybe it’s extra inflammation.
As a hormone coach and someone who’s worked in wellness for 14+ years, it was honestly hard to admit I needed help.
But I knew if I wanted real answers, I had to get to the root cause.
Enter: functional medicine.
So what is functional medicine?
It’s an approach that looks at the whole person, not just isolated symptoms. Instead of asking “What drug treats this problem?” the question becomes “Why is this problem happening in the first place and how do we fix it for good?”
Why functional over traditional medicine?
I’ve chosen this path because:
→ I want answers beyond “your labs look normal.”
→ I want a plan that connects hormones, stress, sleep, nutrition, and gut health as one system.
→ I want to feel my best as I get older, not just “fine.”
How I started:
I booked a tour and a 60-minute intake appointment at a new functional medicine clinic in Nashville.
It was unlike anything I’ve experienced.
My practitioner asked about my health history starting from birth until now. Every detail mattered.
What we’re digging into first:
- Gut health: I just did my first GI Map, a test that looks at the microbiome, pathogens, and digestive function.
- Labs: They drew 12 (!) vials of blood to run 50+ markers. Everything from cholesterol and A1C to hormones, inflammation, and nutrient levels.
I have no idea where this will lead, but I’m excited to start this journey.
And I’ll be sharing everything I learn along the way, so you can see if it’s the right path for you too.
